Today, the Florida Legislature adjourned sine die on the 2023 legislative session.
In response, DeSantis Watch Constituencies Director Natasha Sutherland issued the following statement:
“Over the last sixty days, Ron DeSantis and his rubber stamp legislature have waged a non-stop assault on our freedoms by passing an extreme near-total abortion ban, more unconstitutional legislation that will cost Florida taxpayers millions to defend in court, and dangerous permitless carry of loaded, concealed guns that will make us less safe. As our costs have continued to rise, Ron DeSantis kept his focus solely on his own political ambitions by continuing to check off boxes on his Iowa checklist with attacks on our LGBTQ+, immigrant, and Black communities that erode our freedom to be our true and authentic selves, to work for our version of the American Dream, and to exercise our right to cast a ballot.
“This session has been nothing more than a continuation of the Governor’s focus on taxpayer handouts and bailouts of the corporate elites, endless favors for his insurance industry donors as premiums continued to skyrocket for Floridians, and his relentless quest to silence the First Amendment rights of those who disagree with his authoritarian takeover of state government. Floridians deserve a governor who believes that no matter where you come from, who you love, or what your background, you deserve the freedom to be healthy, prosperous and safe, but Ron DeSantis’ biggest accomplishment this session was passing an agenda that led to tanking poll numbers for his flailing presidential campaign.”
