Tomorrow, the permitless carry law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis behind closed doors with members of the National Rifle Association in attendance will become law in Florida. This legislation garnered full-throated support from the Governor despite evidence that weakening public carry laws leads to double-digit increases in violent crime rates and homicides and that this legislation was opposed by more than three-quarters of Floridians.
In order to hold Ron DeSantis accountable for this dangerous new change to Florida law, DeSantis Watch, a project of DW PAC, is releasing a new digital video titled “Safe” spotlighting how permitless carry puts public safety at risk.
“Everyone deserves the freedom to be healthy, prosperous, and safe, but Ron DeSantis’ dangerous permitless carry law puts those freedoms at risk,” said DeSantis Watch Constituencies Director Natasha Sutherland. “We need reasonable restrictions like background checks and training that allow responsible gun owners to protect their families, but Ron DeSantis’ blueprint for America means letting dangerous individuals carry hidden, loaded guns in our streets, grocery stores, and shopping centers. At a time when gun violence is rising and mass shootings are becoming more common across the state of Florida, it is absolutely shameful that Ron DeSantis prioritized his political ambitions and the wishes of the gun lobby ahead of keeping the people he was elected to serve safe in their communities.”
