TALLAHASSEE — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 433, legislation largely written by lobbyists for billionaires and the corporate elite, which will ban cities and counties from establishing protections for outdoor workers in extreme heat and ban local governments from setting minimum wage requirements for what private contractors pay employees for publicly funded projects.
In response, DeSantis Watch Constituencies Director Natasha Sutherland released the following statement:
“From Pensacola to the Keys, Floridians work hard and they all deserve the freedom to be healthy, prosperous, and safe, but Ron DeSantis is always more concerned with the needs of his billionaire and corporate elite donors than doing what is right for his actual constituents.
“At a time when Floridians across our state are feeling the heat of hotter summers caused by the climate crisis and dealing with affordability issues that are making it harder every day for workers to save for a secure retirement or pay for the medical care their families need, self-serving politicians like Ron DeSantis are putting the health and economic security of workers at risk.
“Florida’s workers deserve higher wages, protections from greedy corporations who profit from their labor while refusing to pay their fair share in taxes, and policies that will improve their lives, not the bottom lines of the donors who have stuffed the campaign accounts of Ron DeSantis and his Republican allies in the legislature.”
